2015-11-27 , Updated 2015-12-02 00:00

Within 9 months of this year, number of domestic tourists in Lithuanian accommodation establishments has increased by even 10.8 percent (from January to September), if compared to the same period last year; while the number of foreign tourists increased by 2.4 percent. Foreign tourists form 54.9 percent and domestic – 45.1 percent of the total tourism market.

During nine months of the year 2015, Lithuania has been mainly visited by German tourists, in total of 152 thousand: it is + 4.2 percent more than during the same period last year. For the first time, the amount of German tourist accommodation far exceeds the long-term leaders of inbound tourism (Russia and Belarus) and represents 14 percent of Lithuanian inbound tourism market.

According to the Head of Inbound Tourism Subdivision of State Department of Tourism Egle Kudzmaniene, major group of the Germans coming to Lithuania consists of older Germans who travel within Lithuania by bus and visit the main cities of Lithuania and the seaside. Even 40 percent of Germans visit other Baltic states too during their visit in Lithuania.

“The Germans like Lithuania, thus this market has a huge potential to grow in the future. Since 2013, the SDT has a local representative in Germany and carries out complex marketing tools, which cover presentation of Lithuania in tourism exhibitions and events, working with local journalists and tour operators, various promotional campaigns. Currently, the main purpose of the SDT is to improve awareness of Lithuania in Germany and attract young people to visit our country,” said E. Kudzmaniene.

The visitors of Lithuania from Belarus, which is in the second place, constitute 118.3 thousand of tourists; it is 12.6 percent less than during the same period last year. The flow of tourists from Russia, which is in the third place, has decreased by one-third (33.7 percent.), down to 118 thousand.

The highest tourist growth in the main market top 10 of Lithuanian inbound tourism was noted in Norway (+37.6 percent), Ukraine (+23.9 percent), Italy (+20.5 percent) and the UK (+14.2 percent). Neighbouring countries are also growing: +14.7 percent in Estonia, +14.1 percent in Latvia, +7.6 percent in Poland. According to the Head of Inbound Tourism Subdivision of SDT E. Kudzmaniene, the tourist growth amounted to 11.3 percent in the European Union countries during nine months of the year 2015. It is encouraging that the flow of tourists from Sweden (+21.1 percent), Spain (+25.9 percent) and the Netherlands (+18.8 percent) is increasing. In 2015, at the invitation of the SDT, Lithuania has been visited by approximately 80 foreign journalists and 70 tour operators (most of them from European countries), who travelled within Lithuania and were informed of its tourism resources.

Remote markets also maintain big growth: Japan has grown by 49 percent, China by +39.5 percent, and Israel by +16.4 percent. “While working in these markets, SDT actively cooperates with its neighbours Latvia and Estonia. Baltic States are offered as one direction of vacation for tourists from Japan, China and the United States. The three Baltic countries have established a joint committee of the Baltic states, which is the main platform for marketing action planning in remote markets,” said E. Kudzmaniene.
