Japan’s Two Tourism Awards Go To Lithuania

2017-09-26

The third Japan Tourism Awards Ceremony hosted by the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) drew the name of Lithuania twice. The first award went to the State Department of Tourism for its long-standing successful cooperation with Latvia and Estonia in introducing the Baltic region in Japan and increasing tourism flows from the Land of the Rising Sun. The second award was conferred on Kaunas IN for the commemorative route of diplomat Chiune Sugihara in Kaunas and its promotion.

For Lithuania, it was the first time to have been nominated in these awards. France was the only other European country credited in this year’s event.

Tourism Awards were organised by the Japan Association of Travel Agents during the annual Tourism Expo Japan in Tokyo on 21–24 September. Lithuania showcased its tourism opportunities for the second time in the joint Baltic stand.

This year, the Baltic countries enjoyed a special attention. Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were able to share a much bigger stand for offering various presentations, seminars, interactive entertainment for visitors. The Lithuanian Folk Culture Centre introduced the upcoming 2018 Lithuanian Song Festival, and thereby spread the news about the centennial celebration of the restored state of Lithuania and the related festive events, which will hopefully draw many visitors from Japan.

Japan is Lithuania’s priority long-distance market for inbound tourism, which is marked by a steady growth. The number of visits from Japan to Lithuania in 2016 accounted for 24.8 thousand (+9.7 per cent). In 2016, Japanese tourists spent in Lithuania 10.7 million euros, which was 3.9 per cent up on 2015.
