Lithuania now owns another unique tourist attraction – the largest LIKE symbol in the world dedicated to social networks. On Friday, 7 November, this sign was lit in the height of approximately 50 meters on the façade of Druskininkai Snow Arena building which is listed as one of the top five ski slopes in the world. The city to host the largest LIKE symbol in the world was selected last year by social network users via a City Contest application that was specially designed for Like`able Lithuania campaign.

“From now on, not only Druskininkai town but also the whole Lithuania will own another unique tourist attractionthe largest LIKE symbol in the world dedicated to social networks. In order to interest and attract modern tourists, it is important to offer original, non-standard and inspiring things, so the more of such things Lithuania will offer, the more its attractiveness and reputation in the world`s context will increase,” said Dr Raimonda Balnienė, the Chief Advisor of the State Tourism Department.

“I thank all fans and the community of Druskininkai who supported Druskininkai in this contest. Druskininkai is becoming an increasingly beautiful town and is loved by Lithuanian people. We have achieved it thanks to the harmonious community. We are all creating Druskininkai town together and these efforts were also recognised by almost 8 thousand social networks users who supported our resort in the contest,” Ričardas Malinauskas, the Mayor of Druskininkai Municipality, said during the presentation of LIKE symbol.

At the end of the last year, after the winner of the contest became known, Ričardas Malinauskas, the Mayor of Druskininkai Municipality, was handed a symbolic capsule of the LIKE sign which was filled during the symbol lighting ceremony thus leaving a message for future generations. The document which was later put into the capsule was signed by Evaldas Gustas, the Minister of Economy of the Republic of Lithuania, Dr Raimonda Balnienė, the Chief Advisor of the State Tourism Department under the Ministry of Economy, and Ričardas Malinauskas, the Mayor of Druskininkai Municipality. The capsule with the symbolic document inside it will be framed and displayed in the SNOW ARENA complex in Druskininkai.

The LIKE symbol in Druskininkai was built as a result of the Like`able Lithuania project – a campaign for promotion of Lithuania in social networks; during the first year of the campaign, Lithuania has collected more than 1 million “likes” – this is the number of interactions performed by campaign fans in social networks. However, the campaign will not stop at this point and Lithuania will further actively develop its image in social networks. The continuation of the Like`able Lithuania campaign in social networks is expected to further encourage local and incoming tourism, introduce potential tourists to Lithuanian culture and places of interest and provide tourists with useful advices on what is worth doing, seeing and experiencing in our country.
