Russian news agency Interfax reports that Lithuania falls into the top ten of the most popular countries visited during the first quarter of this year by independently travelling Russian tourists. They have also ranked the capital of Lithuania as one of the top ten most favourite foreign cities.

This data was announced by the Russian online hotel reservation website Oktogo.ru, which summarised this year's first quarter hotel reservation statistics of independent Russian travellers.

The top ten most attractive foreign countries for Russian tourists are Italy, Germany, Estonia, Finland, Spain, Czech Republic, France, Lithuania, Thailand and Turkey.

The most visited foreign cities are Tallinn, Prague, Helsinki, Milan, Vilnius, Riga, Istanbul, Paris, Budapest and Berlin.

According to Oktogo.ru, the most expensive city for Russian tourists is Paris, where accommodation costs approximately 490 litas (6700 roubles) a day. The ones looking for more attractive price and quality ratio choose Vilnius, where accommodation for one day costs approximately 168 litas (2300 roubles).

It was also noted that during the first quarter of this year the number of independent Russian tourists booking their hotels online was three times larger than that of the same period last year. Travelling abroad these Russian tourists stayed approximately 4 nights, spending an average of 283 litas (3900 roubles) for one day's accommodation.

"This Russian data coincided with another study – according the British Post Office City Costs Barometer 2014, Vilnius is ranked as providing the second best value for money among 25 city break destinations for British tourists for a second year in a row. We can definitely emphasize that the ratio of prices and the quality of goods and services in Lithuania is quite attractive both to young and dynamic world tourists, who usually plan their trips themselves, and to tourists counting their money and looking for quality services for attractive prices with the help of travel agencies." says Dr Raimonda Balnienė, the Director General of Lithuanian State Department of Tourism.
