The most successful tourism projects 2015 have been awarded

The State Department of Tourism (hereinafter - SDT) has announced and awarded the most successful tourism projects of this year. It is a traditional event that has been organized for the twelfth consecutive year bringing together all tourism professionals that this year for the first time was held in Kaunas. On December 17, in the Town Hall of Kaunas the projects under eleven nominations received the awards. In addition, two persons for their special contributions to the field of tourism were awarded the Crosses of Tourism.

“Incoming and domestic tourism is growing in Lithuania which makes us very optimistic. During the first nine months of this year, the incoming tourism according to the statistics of accommodation establishments has grown almost by 3 percent, whereas the local tourism - by even nearly 11 percent. When meeting the year 2016, we want to thank and reward those who helped our country in achieving such excellent results”, said Rasa Noreikienė, Vice-Minister of Economy.

“There was a large number of nominees. Over this year, in the field of tourism a great amount of good products and initiatives have emerged; even several places competed for the attention of tourists with great success and they can deservedly be called the most successful tourist attractions; excellent results have been achieved by a number of hotels, health tourism service providers, rural tourism homesteads. The expert team from the State Department of Tourism responding to recommendations of various organizations working in these fields has elected the most successful tourism projects and I am very pleased that the awards went to different regions of Lithuania”, told Jurgita Kazlauskienė , Director of SDT.

The Crosses of Tourism for the outstanding contributions to the promotion of tourism were presented to Egidijus Meilūnas, the Lithuanian Ambassador in Japan and Rūta Baškytė, Deputy Director of the State Service for Protected Areas.

The Ambassador Egidijus Meilūnas, in cooperation with the State Department of Tourism, has made a lot so that Japanese tourists could discover Lithuania. Over nine months of this year almost 17,000 Japanese tourists visited Lithuania, by 49 percent more in comparison with the same time of the last year. Under the initiative of the Ambassador, Lithuania is being consistently visited by journalists from prestigious Japanese media channels who participate in sightseeing tours and visit the Lithuanian tourist attractions.

Rūta Baškytė, who for numerous years was Director of the State Service for Protected Areas, at present - Deputy Director, over the years has particularly contributed to the development of one of the priority Lithuanian tourism products - ecotourism and has initiated a number of projects of the above mentioned Service which left the whole Lithuania in admiration: observation towers that have become visitor attraction objects as well as the Treetop Walking Path that was opened this year in Anykščiai Regional Park. In addition, visitor centres and new expositions throughout Lithuania visited annually by thousands of local and foreign tourists have opened their doors likewise.

The following projects have been announced and awarded as the most successful tourism projects of the year:

  • The most successful tourism product 2015 – the Dolphinarium of the Lithuanian Sea Museum (Klaipėda)
  • The most successful tourist attractions 2015 – Birštonas and Anykščiai
  • The most successful tourism initiative 2015 – Raudondvaris Manor Arts Incubator (Kaunas district)
  • The most successful tourism information/visitor centre 2015 – the National Visitors’ Centre of the State Service for Protected Areas (Vilnius)
  • The most successful media project promoting tourism 2015 – “National Expedition” by LRT
  • The most successful accommodation services provider 2015 – “IDW Esperanza Resort” (Trakai district)
  • The most successful health tourism service provider 2015 – the medical SPA “Eglės”(Birštonas)
  • The most successful rural tourism service provider 2015 – the rural tourism farmstead “Senosios Gegužinės ūkis” (Kaišiadorys district)
  • The most successful tourism ambassador 2015 – the tour guide Liudmila Vitkienė (Kaunas)
  • The most successful tour operator 2015 – “Delta tours” (Kaunas)
  • Special nomination for innovation – Talking sculptures (Vilnius)

For celebrating the tourism professionals’ awards, Kaunas was chosen on purpose. This spring the unique architecture of Kaunas has been awarded the European Heritage Label. Kaunas interwar architecture can become the fifth Lithuanian object included into the UNESCO World Heritage List. Moreover, Kaunas is preparing an application and strives to become the European Capital of Culture in 2022.
