Tourism in Lithuania is Growing Even During the Off-season

2017-06-12

During the first three months of this year, about half a million tourists visited Lithuania with at least one overnight stay, which is 8.6% more compared to the same period last year. Local tourists accounted for 51.2% of this number making it 10.7% higher than the number recorded during January, February and March 2016.

“Lithuania was chosen as a starting point for travelling by tourists of all the neighbouring countries. The highest number of tourists – 37,500 – were received from Russia (+9.8%), as many as 36.700 came from Belorussia (+2.2%), 25,500 tourists arrived from Latvia (+3.5%) and 22,400 – from Poland (+5.1%). Belorussians had the biggest number of overnight stays in Lithuania of all foreign tourists – more than 100,000 – which means that Belorussians had on average 2.8 overnight stays in Lithuania per one trip. The number of an average stay by the Ukrainians has increased by 20%. As available data shows, the Lithuanians also travel very actively during the off-season, when the flow of foreign tourists reduces, and in this way help the tourism industry survive. In general, the figures illustrating the growth in tourism during the first months of the year draw an optimistic picture and show that we can effectively reduce the seasonality by the presently applied marketing instruments,” Indrė Trakimaitė-Šeškuvienė, acting head of the Tourism Department, commented on the first quarter results of accommodation establishments.

Majority of tourists – as many as 82% – were from the EU countries. The number of tourists from remote markets grew in terms of choosing an overnight stay in Lithuania. The flow of tourists from the USA increased by 27%. The number of tourists from Israel, who stayed in Lithuania’s accommodation establishments, has increased by 24.7%, from China – by 4.9%. The biggest growth of tourists out of TOP20 of Lithuania’s inbound tourism markets during the first quarter of the year was recorded from the Netherlands – it increased by 60.3%.

More than half (60.8%) of all foreigners chose an overnight stay in Vilnius. As much as one third of local tourists chose accommodation establishments in resort towns for their overnight stay: 79,600 stayed overnight in Druskininkai, 39,100 – in Palanga, 24,000 – in Birštonas, 2,000 – in Neringa. These numbers account for the following growth:  47.5% – in Birštonas, 35.9% – in Neringa, and 14.2% – in Palanga compared to 1Q 2016.

The aforementioned data has been drawn up referring to the statistical information provided by the Lithuanian Department of Statistics on accommodation establishments, except for rural tourism resorts, in 1Q 2017.
